Frequently Asked Questions
How do weight loss injections work?
Wegovy®, commonly known as Ozempic®, was originally developed as a medication for Type 2 diabetes. It was found to cause significant weight loss in patients taking it due to it causing appetite suppression, and in 2023 it was licensed to be used to treat obesity alone. Mounjaro® is a similar drug licensed that also works by suppressing appetite. They work by mimicking the hormone your gut produces to tell your brain that you are full.
How do I take it?
These medications are injected into your subcutaneous fat, usually in the abdomen, once a week. Starting at a low dose, the dose will usually be increased every 4 weeks.
Does it hurt?
The needles required are very small, so you will feel either a small 'jag' or even nothing at all!
Are there side effects?
Gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea are relatively common, but are a sign that the medication is working and tend to reduce as your body gets used to the medication. Studies show that less than 10% of patients will have side effects that force them to stop taking the medication. As a qualified GP and weight management specialist, Dr Parke will be able to help manage any side effects if they arise.
